Freedom Center Birmingham, Alabama

Preface
As an architecture designer who fortunately attended the design group on the great project-Freedom Center of Birmingham, I believe that it is reasonable to give some discussions on the possibilities ideas of the design in public. This article will give several ideas of the project which follows with relative academic fields such as historical research, philosophy, music, literature, art, etc.

 

Project Background
There is no doubt that the great civil right movement happened in Birmingham Alabama of America during 1960’s changed the history of the nation’s constitutional reform process. Birmingham Al, one of the most important civil right movement southern center (the other two important southern civil rights movement cities are Atlanta and Memphis), which plays an irreplaceable role in the entire movement events during 1960’s. Very recently, the local government decided to transform the civil rights district landmark building group-A.G. Gaston Motel into a brand new project-the Freedom Center of Birmingham. Based on the City Council $10 million budget, the former AG Gaston Motel will be restored and a Freedom Center will be built. Birmingham is applying for a World Heritage Site designation for its major civil rights sites. The civil rights district of Birmingham Al includes Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Kelly Ingram Park, the 16th Street Baptist Church, and the famous A.G. Gaston Motel.

 

Abstract
Literature, history, art, music, architectural history, architecture, theology, and philosophy will serve as the source of creative theory and clues for this design proposal. This studies contain the important letters and literary works at that time and related documents, activities; to tap its impact on the place and the creation of historical status, with particular attention, is the local South African American organization of immeasurable influence and history Status, and all this can be traced back to the activities of the African-American Baptist Churches, which in turn has to relate to the influence of theology on the space of the place. Through the study of these materials, to discover and clear the relevant clues, and these clues to the overall project are the architectural form of creative ideas and design means important basis. It is worth mentioning that the transformation project with the entire civil rights historical area will be considered as a declaration of the United Nations world cultural heritage.

 

Project Overview
Freedom Center building groups and Alabama and even the entire civil rights movement of historical events, people, ideas, and spirit. Is a review of the past, the dialogue of today and the sustenance of the future. The environment in which the project is located is very special and is of great historical and cultural value. The 16th Street Baptist Church, which is a national history of the United States, stands silently on the streets of the Birmingham Institute of Civil Rights, and the masonry and windows on the walls seem to keep telling the thrilling events of the sixties. The appeal is strong, so that the visitors’ awe, to enter the hall of the visitors, believers were moved.
